The problem
Privileged client communication is the most sensitive data a firm holds — and most of it sits in a cloud mailbox you don't operate, mixed in with everything else, hard to tie to a matter and harder to produce in discovery.
The life of a message
Arrived. Filed & ruled. Asked. Sent as the firm.
Every other legal tool integrates with an inbox it doesn’t control. EdgeLex ships the inbox — and the server underneath it. Every screen below is the real product.
01 · Arrived
Mail arrives already on the record.
A message linked to a matter is linked automatically — on arrival and on send — and flows straight into that matter's Communications tab. The folder rail carries the firm's Case Files taxonomy, the reading pane shows the linked state at a glance (matter, client, privilege), and relinking is one click when the machine guesses wrong.

02 · Filed & ruled
Attachments become documents. Rules preview before they move.
An attachment on a linked message is auto-filed in EdgeDocs — a governed DMS document in the matter's folder before anyone downloads anything. And mail rules are built like a lawyer would want them: match sender, domain, or subject; move into a Case Files folder; and preview exactly what will move before anything does. The context menu's LEGAL section — Mark as Privileged, Link to Matter, Link to Client — is one right-click away.
Where attachments land →Preview matching messages before anything moves.

03 · Asked
“Did opposing counsel respond yet?” — answered with receipts.
Lex lives inside the client with an explicit scope: this message, this thread, or the whole mailbox. Ask whether the other side ever responded and the answer is a grounded negative — the last outbound message with its timestamp, the latest inbound with its timestamp, and the observation that it predates your question. A finding, not a guess.

Maya, no — I found no response from Northstar’s counsel after your most recent email to Daniel Ostrander: “Proof of service,” sent August 12, 2026 at 11:14 a.m.
The latest incoming email from Mr. Ostrander is “Fw: EX PARTE — Notification of Service,” received July 20, 2026 at 3:27 p.m., which predates your August 12 email.

Identities, signatures, and outbound that links itself.
Compose from any of the firm's sending identities, each with its own configured signature — templates or Draft with AI. Outbound mail links to the matter the same way inbound does, so the Sent folder inside Case Files is part of the record, not a personal archive.

The EdgeMail Server
Yes, your own mail server. Here’s why that’s not scary.
Running a mail server has a deserved reputation, and lawyers are right to be wary — deliverability, spam, uptime, none of it is your job. So it isn’t your job here: EdgeMail ships as an operated part of the platform, a standards-based stack configured, monitored, and updated with your deployment — SPF, DKIM, and DMARC handled, no shell required. In return: your mail is never scraped by an advertising company, storage rides your own bucket or disk with no practical mailbox limit, and for a firm of three or more the per-seat mail tax disappears — Exchange Online runs $12.50 to $35 per user per month, forever; EdgeMail bills like infrastructure, not headcount. Legal hold, server-side privilege, and SOC2 / ABA / GDPR audit reports come standard.
S1 · Operated
A dashboard that admits degradation is one you can trust.
Tenant health at a glance — mailboxes, message flow, storage, queue workers with dead-letter visibility — and a status banner that says "some systems experiencing issues" when they are. Database, SMTP, IMAP, and identity latencies on the board, checked just now. Monitoring that tells the truth is the whole point of operating your own mail.

Mailboxes, quotas, groups — and one for Lex.
The firm's mailboxes with per-mailbox quotas and status, distribution groups on the same console, and two details worth noticing: the AI assistant has its own governed mailbox, and a departed associate's mailbox sits suspended with its record intact — offboarding without spoliation.
Distribution groups ride the same console: accounting@chenokafor.com · Distribution · Active — plus per-mailbox quotas, and a suspended mailbox keeps its record for the file.
S3 · Migrated
Getting off Exchange is a job queue, not a leap of faith.
Import history from Outlook (PST/OST/MSG/EML), Gmail, or any IMAP source. Jobs run with content-hash deduplication — a rerun reconciles instead of double-importing — and anything that fails lands in a visible dead-letter queue. Thousands of messages in, nothing silently dropped.
⤒ Migration⊕ New job
Import historical email from Outlook (PST/OST/MSG/EML), Gmail (Takeout/Workspace/IMAP), and other sources.
🕓 Jobs⊕ Create⚠ Dead Letter
Content-hash deduplication makes reruns reconciliation, not double-import — 2,929 duplicates recognized and skipped on the big job above. Failures land in a dead-letter queue you can see, not a void.

The difference
The inbox is the record.
Half of every case lives in email. A webmail giant treats that as content to scan; a practice-management “integration” treats it as someone else’s data to sync. EdgeMail treats it as what it is — the matter’s correspondence record — linked on arrival, filed on receipt, privileged at the server, and stored inside the firm’s own walls.
The security posture →Linked on arrival
Matter, client, and privilege attach automatically — inbound and outbound — and feed the matter's Communications tab.
Never scraped
No advertising company reads the firm's mail. The server, the storage, and the audit trail live in your deployment.
No per-seat mail tax
Three lawyers or thirty — mail bills like infrastructure, not headcount. Legal hold and compliance reports included.
Capabilities
What it does
Self-hosted mail system
The firm's own mailboxes and domains (SMTP / IMAP), with spam filtering and DKIM / SPF / DMARC controls. No cloud mailbox provider required.
Matter-linked communications
Link emails to matters and clients, auto-file at the folder level, search within a matter, and surface communications on the matter timeline.
Legal privilege marking
Mark messages and threads as attorney-client or work-product, with legal-hold and retention tracking.
AI email features
Focused / other inbox classification, thread summarization focused on deadlines, action items, and agreements, task extraction from threads, smart-reply drafts (draft only, never auto-sent), and AI matter / client / folder suggestions.
Discovery-ready
Full-text and semantic search, thread reconstruction, and one-click export of attachments into the DMS as documents.
Admin
Custom-domain onboarding with DNS verification, mailbox and quota management, distribution groups, address routing, and PST / archive migration with canary review.
In your control
Email bodies and attachments are stored in firm-controlled storage with multi-tenant isolation and a full admin audit log. Note: connecting external personal accounts (Gmail / Outlook / IMAP) is not supported — migration means importing PST / archives into EdgeMail.
