The problem
Fabricated and miscited authority is a documented, sanctionable risk — and a generative model that invents citations will do it confidently.
What a cite-check actually is
Checked. Flagged. Interrogated. Everywhere.
Follow one document’s citations through the verifier — every screen below is the real product.
01 · Checked
Every citation, verified against a ledger — not vibes.
EdgeCite extracts every case, statute, and rule cite from a document and verifies each one deterministically against the authority ledger inside your deployment. The report shows citation, status, authority, and source — per cite, down to the pin page.
Verified With Warnings

02 · Flagged
The fabricated cite never survives.
A reference missing its source context gets a named issue and a suggested action. A pin that can't be confirmed stays Pin Unverified. And a citation that doesn't exist in the approved corpus gets the sentence that matters: possible fabricated or mis-transcribed citation — flagged for a lawyer, never waved through.
These references look like legal citations, but EdgeCite needs the code name, reporter, or jurisdiction before it can verify them automatically.
17 Cal. App. 4th 958 — Verification incomplete (pin_unverified).
148 Cal. App. 3d 654 — Verification incomplete (pin_unverified).
119 Cal. App. 5th 367 — Citation was not found in the approved source corpus; possible fabricated or mis-transcribed citation.
Pin-cite verification checks the exact page, not just the case. A cite that exists but doesn’t support the pin stays flagged.
03 · Interrogated
Deep-dive any cite — and Lex shows its epistemology.
Ask about one citation and the answer distinguishes what it actually knows: the saved report says Verified, but the fresh resolver query this turn didn't independently re-confirm the section's text — so the answer says exactly that, recommends the citation form, and lists what to verify before filing. That honesty is the product.
Citation review: Cal. Civ. Proc. Code § 472 is a real, currently-cited California statute — the saved EdgeCite report already marked it Verified against the firm’s authority ledger — and it is the correct statutory hook for the “amendment without leave” issue flagged in the tentative ruling.
Basis for this answer: Saved EdgeCite report (status: Verified, source: edgelex_authority_ledger). A fresh court-authority resolver query this turn returned CCP §§ 1, 4, 17, 19, 35, and 36 — but none of those source chunks were § 472 itself. The Verified status rests on the saved report, not on a fresh pull of the section’s text.
Recommended citation form: Cal. Civ. Proc. Code § 472 — pin to subdivision (a), since that is the subdivision the ruling relies on for the amendment-without-leave analysis.
What to verify before filing: confirm the current text of subdivision (a) directly on the official legislative source before quoting or paraphrasing it.

Cite-check status travels with the work.
The verdict chip rides on the document row in the DMS, the checker runs inside EdgeDocs and the Word add-in, and Lex's drafting graphs cite-check their own output before a deliverable lands.
DMS
In the file list
“Cite-check: verified with warnings · 5 to review” sits on the document row — status travels with the record.
EdgeDocs
The Citations tab
Cite-check runs inside the editor and the Word add-in; drafts get checked before they leave.
Lex
Every drafted brief
Drafting graphs auto-cite-check their own output — a deliverable ships with its report attached.
Chat
Deep dive on demand
One command interrogates any single citation — status, basis, form, and what to verify before filing.
The difference
Deterministic — not another model’s opinion.
Some tools answer the fabrication problem by having a second AI reassure you about the first. EdgeCite verifies against an authority corpus inside your deployment: the case either exists in the ledger or it doesn’t, the pin page either supports the cite or it doesn’t — and when verification is incomplete, the report says so instead of rounding up to “fine.”
How research uses it →In-deployment ledger
Essentially every published US caselaw citation verifies locally — no external dependency at check time.
Pin-cite rigor
Existing case, wrong page? Still flagged. Verification means the pin, not just the caption.
Honest statuses
Verified · Pin Unverified · Source needed · Not found. Never a false green.
Capabilities
What it does
Citation extraction & validation
Extract citations from a document and validate them against your firm's curated case library by deterministic lookup — no guessing.
Citation governance
A full-document cite-check produces a report with verification status and counts. Citations needing human judgment route to a review queue.
Citation graph
Track how documents cite cases, with context and mention type (holding, dicta, criticism).
Grounded-first
Deterministic validation runs before any AI inference, so the baseline is provable. AI handles only fuzzy or semantic resolution on top.
In your control
The firm owns and curates the known-case corpus, with per-firm isolation and every resolution traceable to its source.
